SEO: Search Engine Optimization and web design

The basic idea with a website is to attract as many visitors as possible; it does not help to have a well organized, informative, and pleasing website when it is not visited. In particular, a company would want to be found based on a search for those products and services the company is offering before the competitor's website is found. To be found before the competition means having a higher ranking with the search engines than the competition for a well defined set of criteria. Search Engine Optimization ("SEO") is the process of finding and implementing the measures that increase the ranking of a website with the search engines.

When searching the web, one will find many different definitions of SEO. We have our own definition that reflects the way we are doing SEO:

Search Engine Optimization is a process for increasing the ranking of a website with the various search engines based on web standards and the recommendations of the search engines in compliance with well defined marketing strategies and marketing goals.

It is important to notice that we include “marketing strategies” and “marketing goals” in our definition.

The higher a Web site ranks in the results of a search, the greater the chance that that site will be visited by a user. It is common practice for Internet users to not click through pages and pages of search results, so where a site ranks in a search is essential for directing more traffic toward the site. SEO helps to ensure that a site is accessible to a search engine and improves the chances that the site will be found by the search engine.

Definition of SEO (search engine optimization) according to Marketingterms.com: "The process of choosing targeted keyword phrases related to a site, and ensuring that the site places well when those keyword phrases are part of a Web search." We think this definition is incomplete but symptomatic for the confusion that exists not only about web users, but also among people considering themselves specialists. The reason for our successes in SEO is that we take every conceivable possibility into account when doing search engine optimization (SEO) of a website.
